Starfields Summer Sessions: Reviewed
Zoe reviews a St Andrews classic: Starfields Summer Session organised by FS.
Starfields, a typical St Andrews event that is hard to describe to those who aren’t from St Andrews and don’t quite get the weird charm of a small town, which can at times have the buzz and social calendar of a big city. Starfields is no different. It’s an annual festival-type event, I would say it’s a bit like being in the D n B tent with mainly DJ’s performing. It is organised by FS, one of the charity fashion societies in St. Andrews, showcasing headliners that you have often heard of before or will at least recognise when they play.
In true Union North nature, when one first arrives it is a little quiet. Lots of people are getting drinks, which were union prices, and considering how expensive drinks can be at big events, it felt nice not to be completely overcharged. The only drawback is that it was cash only, something which, if you didn’t know beforehand, would leave you quite stuck.
The lineup for Saturday night: they had the supporting acts Burra and Tigre and then headlining was Jax Jones. Originally it was supposed to be John Summit headlining, but due to covid, this was changed, although considering Jax Jones has four times the number of monthly Spotify streamers it was not a bad swap out.
As for the DJ’s actual sets, it did take a while for people to warm up and get into it. Burra had a bit of a crowd but not huge, and some of what he played felt a little random. By the time Tigre was on and the sun had set, the crowd started to build to quite a large size, and a good vibe was going. Tigre was playing some excellent music and the crowd was really warming up for Jax Jones. When Jax Jones appeared the crowd was ready, and by this point, my friend and I had found ourselves at the front so we were ready. It must be said, Jax Jones’ set was incredible. The only drawback was that it was so good that people in the crowd were going wild. So the security guards spent two-thirds of the set standing on the barrier box leaning over, not the most fun viewing. Whilst obviously safety is important but normally there are some things such as shoulder sitting that are allowed to fly at festivals, and at times it felt like they were standing there for no reason, so much so that at one point a girl tapped one of them to move!
Whilst Starfields is good, it is not quite Glastonbury yet, but as someone said, people know this but go anyway. I think that is part of what makes Starfields, you’re bound to have a good time and bump into lots of people you haven’t seen in three and a half months. In addition, it is the end of summer, the last of the sun was shining and people were dressed up in the last of their crazy summer clothes, giving one last hurrah to summer. It puts people in a good mood, despite the fact that everyone is losing the little of their voice that they have left.
