TOP Sponsor - McDonald’s

For Rio, the QSR chain is sticking with its formula of hosting kids at the Games and opening a restaurant in the Olympic Village.

Digital/Social Leveraging

The company’s content marketing team is documenting the journey of participants in the McDonald’s Olympics Kids Program for use in social media. Social posts carry the hashtag #FriendsWin. The company released a digital spot touting the program as well:

On-Site Activation/Presence

The McDonald’s Olympics Kids Program is sending about 100 children, age 8-to-12, from 18 countries to the Games in Rio. The participants were chosen because they exemplified the spirit of friendship. Each country conducted their own local promotion to select kids to send.

McDonald’s has sent kids to the Games since 2008, but Rio 2016 will be the first time they will participate in the Opening Ceremony along with other sporting activities and athlete meet-and-greets.

The company once again has a restaurant located in the International Zone of the Olympic Village, serving media, and athletes and their friends and families. In addition, McDonald’s has a Brazil dessert center in Barra Olympic Park, serving Games visitors McFlurry desserts with local flavors and other treats.

Athlete Partnerships

McDonald’s “gold-medal panel of ambassadors” for the Olympics Kids Program includes U.S. Olympic gymnasts Bart Conner and Nadia Comaneci and their nine-year old son; U.S. Olympic swimmer Dara Torres and her nine-year old daughter, and U.S. Olympic soccer player Julie Foudy and her 9-year old daughter and eight-year old son. Olympians and their children from Australia, Brazil and Japan also are participating in the program.
